Everywhere in the world – except that in Italy and France – the typical breakfast is salty: eggs and bacon are the common foods in almost every country for the most important meal of the day.
Dubai is full of places which serve this kind of breakfast until mid afternoon. I often enjoy this type of meal at the weekend, when I wake up too late for a traditional Italian breakfast and it’s too early for a proper lunch.
One of the places I like to go is Le pain quotidien. There are many of them in the city but usually I like to go to the one in the Dubai Marina Mall: there’s a beautiful large window giving lots of natural light and plenty of tables outdoors where you can eat when the weather permits.
Le pain quotidien offers boulangerie fare made with organic ingredients whenever possible and many of its breakfast include a basket full of different kinds of fresh bread, delicious to eat with butter and the various organic jams they give you. – Although it’s not very hygienic as those baskets and jams pass from table to table, each time I can’t resist and I eat far too much of it! – The bread and desserts are really delicious.
Among their breakfasts I prefer the ‘Continental‘ because it’s quite comprehensive, including an organic bread basket + jams, choice of cheese (a very small portion), choice of pastries – I always opt for the apple muffin with cinnamon, it’s delicious! – and a hot drink. In my opinion, the only thing missing is the egg – so that’s why usually I ask to have one added.
If you order a cappucino, be forewarned that although it’s not bad, it’s a lot hotter than the standard Italian version.
An excellent alternative to the Continental Breakfast is The Angler, which is part of the brunch menu. It’s perfect for a mid-morning breakfast, as it uses saltier ingredients including smoked salmon, soft boiled egg, croissant, baguette and a mini granarola parfait.

If you’re an Eggs Benedict fan, then I suggest you go elsewhere. I highly recommend Le Fournil De Pierre or, if you’ve worked up a good appetite, Social House, where you’ll be served 3 eggs! To be honest, I wasn’t impressed by Le Pain Quotidien’s version, which uses a sweet brioche – I prefer the classic bread – and the Hollandaise sauce had an odd consistency, as you’ll see from the photo. The Eggs Benedict at Le Pain Quotidien are not worth a second glance.
That said, if you like savoury breakfasts, then the Le Pain Quotidien Breakfast – which consists of an organic bread basket + jams, choice of omelette and a hot beverage – seems to provide the heartiest meal. I can’t comment on the taste as I didn’t try it, but it certainly looks tempting.
